Podcast looking at what DJing means to us at different points of our lives, for better and for worse, hosted by @_adamgow

The Bronx legend responsible for Dusty Fingers and The Bronx legend responsible for Dusty Fingers and Schoolyard Breaks, a true scholar, a man with some great stories, Danny Dann Beat Mann, rest in peace.

He was a north start for me from day 1 so it was great to get him on the show. We talked digging, DJing, beatmaking, girlfriends with parents with good records, and more.

RIP a true king of digging.

This was a fun one — recorded live here at Canopy Derby ( @canopy_menswear ) with the legend that is Dan Lish ( @danlish1 ) as part of his Egostrip 2 book tour ( @velocitypress ). Dan’s a B-boy, illustrator and genuine hip hop lifer, and this conversation goes deep.

We talk about growing up in Suffolk catching glimpses of hip hop culture through US Air Force bases and pirate radio, how B-boying became an outlet for a really difficult few years growing up, moving to New York and living the grassroots scene properly — block parties in Queens, practicing in the Bronx, linking with Zulu Nation — and how his illustration work grew from train commute sketches into portraits that Rakim and Pete Rock were sharing around.

Oh, and he’s got a Stevie Wonder book coming out. No biggie.

Whether you’re into hip hop history, illustration, or just a good honest chat about creativity and finding your people — this one’s for you. Link in @onceadjpodcast bio 🔗

Enjoy!
Bonus content from the episode with the legendary Bonus content from the episode with the legendary @djmrthing - we got into some of his best bargain bins beats and there’s some absolute fire in this list!

DJ Super Dmitry — one third of Dee-Lite — joins me for one of the most wide-ranging conversations we’ve had on the show.

We go from Soviet Ukraine, to black market vinyl, to arriving in New York on Halloween 1978, to working as an elevator operator at Danceteria while Madonna and the Beastie Boys hung around downstairs.

And then, somehow, to one of the greatest dance records ever made.

Groove Is in the Heart almost didn’t happen. Elektra didn’t believe in it. Q-Tip wrote his verse in 15 minutes and nailed it in two takes. Bootsy Collins casually showed up with Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker. 300,000 people at Rock in Rio was their first proper gig with a full band.

There are also stories in here about his grandmother cutting piano keys out of paper during the Russian Revolution just so she could practise. About buying Western records on the Soviet black market for $50 a pop. About why Giuliani’s New York crackdown sent him to Berlin. And about the lockdown project with a woman in Brazil that became both an album and a marriage.

This one’s got everything. Link in bio. 🎧

Recorded a few weeks ago, on next week’s episode w Recorded a few weeks ago, on next week’s episode with Nauti Siren and Dee Lite’s Super DJ Dmitry, we talked about the late great Bob Power, so it felt right to share this while he’s in so many people’s thoughts.

What a talented guy and such an important if at times unsung legend of hip hop and beyond. RIP.
